Full Moon Observances
Poya Days
In the Theravāda Buddhist tradition, the full moon day (Poya) holds special significance. Many of the most important events in the Buddha’s life occurred on full moon days — his birth, enlightenment, and passing away.
On Poya days, lay practitioners are encouraged to visit the monastery, observe the eight precepts, and engage in extended practice. The programme typically includes morning and evening chanting, meditation sessions, a Dhamma talk, and the opportunity to offer dāna to the Sangha.
Poya days are public holidays in Sri Lanka, reflecting the deep integration of Buddhist practice into the culture of the island.
